FlickrExport 3 Sneak Peek: Photoset Creation

It’s been a while since I posted anything about FlickrExport 3. Here’s another new feature: an overhauled UI for creating photosets. Click the picture below to watch a brief screencast.

This feature is identical in Aperture and iPhoto.

FlickrExport 3 does a number of things differently to earlier versions. Firstly, you can choose your primary photo from within FlickrExport. In previous versions, the primary photo could only be the first image in your export. Now you can choose. You can also order the photos in your set in an arbitrary order – it doesn’t have to be the same as the upload order.

To enhance reliability, FlickrExport 3 creates the photoset immediately after the first photo has been uploaded. On every subsequent upload, it adds the uploaded photo to the set and reorders the set to match the order you specified. This means that, if you lose your wifi halfway through, the photos that did get uploaded will be in a photoset in their proper order.

On the topic of upload failures, unfortunately, FlickrExport 3 will not support resuming failed uploads. This is partly because of limitations in the iPhoto and Aperture plugin APIs. I understand how much people want this feature and I’m looking at ways to work around these limitations in a future .1 release.

Regarding a release date for FE3, it’s still a little early to say.
